Cyclone separator at the extraction of the spreading saw

Extraction of the saw blade by means of a transport fan and a cyclone separator with sawdust discharge into a large capacity container

Our company has implemented an extraction system for a sawmill, which includes a transport fan, a cyclone separator and sawdust discharge into a large capacity container. This system has been designed for efficient extraction of wet sawdust generated during raw wood processing.

Comprehensive supply and installation of the extraction system

Our delivery included not only the manufacture and installation of the transport fan and cyclone separator, but also the rotary feeder and the steel substructure to house the container. The entire system is optimised for the specific extraction needs of the powerful dimensioning saw. For this application, we chose a cyclone separator instead of a conventional filtration system because of the specific conditions associated with wet sawdust extraction. With a filtration device, the filter media could freeze in winter, leading to operational problems. The cyclone separator maintains stable operating conditions throughout the year, regardless of temperature fluctuations.

Installation and implementation

The installation of the entire extraction system was provided by our implementation unit G&G Filtration CZ, s.r.o., which took care of the smooth installation and commissioning of the equipment.

Use of cyclone separators in practice

Cyclone separators are often chosen as dust pre-separators before filtration equipment, mainly due to their lower efficiency in separating finer dust fractions. In wet sawdust extraction applications, such as woodworking machines, cyclones are used as the only dust extraction element without subsequent filtration. This option is optimal for situations where the removal of very fine dust is not required and coarser particles need to be effectively separated.

Cyclone separators are also used in enclosed pneumatic transport systems or in flue gas ducts to remove sparks before the flue gas enters the filtration equipment. To increase capacity, cyclones can be connected in parallel side by side or in series to achieve higher separation efficiency.

Advantages of cyclone separators for wet sawdust extraction

For wet sawdust extraction applications, cyclone separators can be used separately, without subsequent filtration, which greatly simplifies and reduces the cost of the entire system. When designing the installation of a cyclone separator, it is necessary to take into account the pressure drop, which varies between 800 and 1200 Pa, depending on the amount and temperature of the extracted air.
